OPTICAL DIVERSITY RECEIVERS

MOHAMMAD MAHMOUD AHMAD;

Abstract

Performance studies of coherent optical fiber communication systems reveal that the system is affected by both phase noise and polarization fluctuations between the state of polarization of the signal and local oscillator.
These problems can be solved using diversity (multi-pmt) receivers. The diversity receivers may be homodyne or heterodyne receivers and use the same modulation formats like single port coherent optical receiver.
Optical diversity receivers are compared with focussing on the effect of imperfections on the performance of ASK diversity receivers.
Two analytical simple methods (SPA and MGA) are applied to different

ASK diversity receivers.

Computation of the bit-error- rate and the sensitivity penalty are calculated under the corruption of phase noise, shot noise, thermal noise and relative intensity noise.
