IMMUNOLOGICAL AND CHROMOSOMAL Sl'UDlES ON THE LlVER Fl.. UKES IN EGYPT

HODA ABDEL HALIM TAHA;

Abstract

The distinction of species within the genus Fasciola has been so far based on the morphological characteristics of the flukes and their egg size. Because these morphological characteristics are highly variable, a wide discrepancy in the recognition of valid species of Fasciola exists. In fact several authors consider the criteria used for the identification of Fasciola species based only on morphology are unreliable.

Chromosomal Study

The present study was concerned with the specific identification of Egyptian Fasciola by studying the karyotype and chromosome number of Fasciola isolates recovered from four hosts. These hosts include sheep, buffaloes, local cows and imported cows. The diploid number of chromosomes in the four isolates is 2n=20. However, within individual worm, this number is varied showing polyploidy that includes triploidy, tetrapolidy and octaploidy.
