ccidentalinjuriestoinfantsandyoungchildrenareoftenserious, butarelargelypreventablewithappropriateinformationandsafepractices.Youngchildrenareparticularlyvulnerabletoaccidentsduetotheirinnatedesiretoexploretheirworldandtheinabilitytoperceivethedangersoftheiractions.Aschildrenlearnthroughexperience, minorinjuriesareinevitablebutprovidingasafeenvironmentcanreducetherisks, coupledwithclosesupervisionandsettingthelimitsofsafety.Parentsshouldrememberthattheyneedtomaintainaconstantbalancebetweenoverprotectingthechildononehandandgivinghimfreedominhisprocessoflearningthehazardsofhisenvironment(Halperinetal., 2008).
Allchildrenareatriskforinjurybecauseoftheirnormalcuriosity, impulsivenessanddesiretomasternewskillsandchildrenimitateadultbehaviorfromanearlyage(Ashwill&Droske, 2010).
Toddlersarequiteactive, curiousandfearlessexplorersintheirownright.Attheirtenderage, theylearntousechairsandclimbuptoreachthingsthatarekeptsupposedlyoutoftheirreach.Thehighlyactivetoddlerswouldstrivetoopenthebolteddoors, drawersandclosets.Intheprocess, theymightcomeacrossthingsthatseemtoattractthem, butarehazardousfortheirhealth(Halperinetal., 2008).
