THE MAGNITUDE OF TUBERCULOSIS PROBLEM AMONG CONTACTS TO SPUTUM ....

Abstract
Tuberculosis is still a major health problem in our community, so the priority should be given to household and close family contacts of sputum positive pulmonary tuberculosis.
The study of contacts to patients with sputum positive pulmonary TB is an important preventive measures, which helps to identify the risk factors of contagion, and to detect new cases of the disease early, then study and follow up of contacts is one of the main goals of the battle against tuberculosis.
The study included 30 patients who were admitted in chest department of Sohag university hospital during the period from August, 1997 to July,• 1998 and proved as having active pulmonary TB by direct smear examination, and contact tracing of these active cases identified 120 persons who met the definition of contact either close (113) or casual(?). The contacts were 63(52.5%) males and 57(47.5%) females, the main age of them was 17.1, and the predominate age group of contacts was below 1o years with total number of 42 (35%).
There were 17 new cases of tuberculosis detected among contacts in whom 15 were diagnosed as pulmonary TB, and 2 were diagnosed as ex1rapulmonary TB ( one case was TB lymphadenitis and one case was pott's disease) with absence of vaccination scar in extrapulmonary cases.
