SUMMARY

This study was conducted on 75 cases proved to have bright liver on sonographic bases. All cases submitted to complete clinical assessment, laboratory investigations (with special emphasis on serological markers for B and C viruses, lipids and liver profiles) and liver biopsy. According to serological and histopathological examination they were 60 patients with hepatic steatosis and 15 patients with chronic hepatitis C. Among the 60 patients, 60% had non alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and 40% had benign steatosis. Demographic features of the studied cases revealed that hepatic steatosis was a disease of both sexes with female predominance (M:F ratio 1: 1.9). It occurs mostly in forth & fifth decades of life and NASH patients were significantly older than benign steatosis. Thirty-five percent of patients with hepatic steatosis were asymptomatic and no significant difference was observed between NASH and benign steatosis as regards frequency and severity of complaints which were commonly easy fatigue and right hypochondria! pain or fullness.

As regard physical examination, hepatomegaly was present in 25% of benign steatosis and 36.1% of NASH patients. Laboratory. investigations showed that ALT and triglycerides levels were significantly higher in NASH than in benign steatosis and a positive correlation was noticed between their serum levels and scoring of hepatic steatosis
