PRELIMINAIY STU-DIES OF THE POTENTIAL EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT OR.GANIC RESIDUES COMBINATIONS ON N-FIXATION, YIELD OF SOYBEAN AND SOIL SUSTAINABILITY

Abstract

The world agriculture including Egypt, faces an unprecedented: how to achieve long tenn sustainability in the supply of adequate levels of feed and fiber for domestic and international markets and humanitarian aid, without degrading the natural environment or resources base, including humans and their communities, upon which agriculture depends. It is the
dual nature of this challen-ge that makes the current situation so daunting.
scientific organic fanning or biologically based fanning systems or
alternative agriculture that are at once productive, profitable and sustainable for the indefinite future should be adopted.

Therefore, the present investigation aimed to :
(1) maximize utilization of rural and urban wastes to improve soil fertility and productivity
(2) reduce the environmental hazard impact of anaerobic digested sewage sludge throughout mixing their cheap materials
(3) enhance or degrade sustainability of soil characteristics, symbiotic N
fixation and crop yield of soybean with/without mineral fertilizers and
(4) reduce or replace mineral fertilizers, i.e., inorganic N and increase residue and fertility inputs.

Pot experiments during the growing seasons 1993-1994, were conducted under wire proof greenhouse conditions using clay pots (15 x
25 em) containing l.5 kg (oven dry basis) surface (0-15 em) representative samples of two different soils, the first is a clay soil from Desouq region, Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate and the second is the calcareous soil located at El-Gazaer Village, 2 km west to the Cairo-Alexandria desert road and
45/km apart from Alexandria, El-Beheira Governorate. The soil samples were air dried, crushed to pass a 2 mm sieve, mixed thoroughly and stored in suitable jars.

Composite samples of anaerobic digested sewage sludge were obtained from Messeer sedimentation plant, Kafr El-Sheikh, air dried,
sieved through 2 mm sieve and thoroughly mixed.
