New protective coatings for mild steel based on polyurethane / polyamide polymers

Abstract

The eco-friendly waterborne polyurethane dispersions (PUDs) have received increased attention as important alternatives to their solvent-based counterparts. Additionally, vegetable oils have become more attractive for the synthesis of polyurethane (PU) because of their economical benefits and the fact that they are made from renewable sources.
Therefore, in this thesis we prepared and characterized a series of dispersions based on polyurethane and polyurethane / polyamide copolymers using castor oil (CO) and the transesterified form of CO (CON). The properties of the coating formulations prepared from such dispersions were studied. Additionally, the protection performance of the formulations films coated on steel against corrosion was studied.

1) Preparation of PU / PA copolymer dispersions
• Amino-terminated aromatic polyamide sulfone (APAS) and CON polyols were firstly prepared before the preparation of the dispersions.
• APAS was prepared using solution polycondensation reaction between terephthaloyl chloride and excess of 4,4′-diaminodiphenyl sulfone.
• The tranesterification reaction of CO was performed to increase the OH value of CO and thus producing films with different properties than those prepared from CO. Triethanolamine (TEOA) was used to transesterify CO at 210 oC for 30, 60, 90 and 120 min to produce
