Evaluation of left ventricular function after mitral valve repair using prosthetic ring

Mohamed Nasr EI-Dien Aman;

Abstract

The present study included 30 patients who had mitral valve disease under went mitral valve reconstructive surgery with prsothetic ring annuloplasty in the National Heart Institute in the period from 1995 to 1997.

The criteria by which our 30 patients were selected:

• All the 30 patients had only isolated mitral valve Regurgitation.

• All the 30 patients had not under gone previous cardiac operations.

• All the 30 patients had no history of acute mitral regurgitation

• All the 30 patients were subjected to mitral valve reconstructive surgery using prosthetic ring annuloplasty

The aim of this work is to study the left ventricular functions after mitral valve reconstruction by using prosthetic ring annuloplasty and comparing it with the preoperative study as regards end diastolic dimension of the left ventricle, end systolic dimension of the left ventricle, ejection fraction and fractional fiber shortening, left atrial diameter and assessment of Pulmonary hypertension.

All the 30 patients were studied preoperatively by electrocardiography, plain X- Ray of the chest, laboratory investigations and echocardiography [M-mode, 2D Doppler and colour Doppler].

Left atrial incision was the surgical approach in all cases. Assessment of mitral valve repair was done intraoperatively by direct vision method and by transesophageal echocardiography.
