Abstract
This study was planned to test the diagnostic and complementary value of t:ransesophageal echocardiography in congenital abnormalities of
the atria and venous atria1 connections compared to TTE using cardiac catheter or operative finding as a gold standard for comparison of both
methods. We also tested the value of TEE in quantitative assessment of atrial septal defect. To achieve this purpose we selected 42 patients with clinical or TTE suspicion of congenital abnormalities of the atria and venous atrial connections from echocardiography laboratory of El Hussein University Hospital and Kagoshima University Hospital in the period from January 1996 to October 2000.
The selected patients underwent the following investigations:
• Thorough history.
• General and cardiac examination.
• 12 leads ECG.
• Comprehensive TTE included right parasternal view.
• Comprehensive TEE
• Quantitative assessment of atrial septal defect by TEE
