PAROTID GLAND TUMORS RE-EVALUATION CLINICOPATHOLOGICAL STUDY

Abstract


Salivary gland tumours are relatively rare, with incidence in the general population is 1-1.5% and constitute 3-4% of all head and neck neoplasms.


About 70% of salivary gland tumours originate in the parotid gland most of them are benign whereas 20% "of parotid tumors" are malignant the Aetiology of tumours remain unknown however, some environmental and genetic factors may be in solved salivmy gland neoplasms can be classilied according to:


(I) Tumor size

(2) Local extension of tumour

(3) Suspicious palpable adenopathy

( 4) Distant metastasis



The overall 10 year survival rate is about 52% and there is a significant difference in the survival between patients with low or intennediate grade malignancies and those with high grade malit,•nancies the most significant prognostic factors are stage of tumour and lymph node metastasis.


A variety of diagnostic nnagmg technique are available for investigations of salivary gland disorders including: sialot,rraphy, radio nucleotide scanning, ultrasonography, computed tomography and magnetic
