The Impact of Nutritional Status on Health-Related Quality of Life Among Elderly in Rural Areas

Abstract


Malnutrition is a global health problem and has a high negative impact on population's health, quality of life and over all morbidity and mortality.
Elderly are more prone to deleterious effects of malnutrition on all dimensions of health and health related quality of life due to increased prevalence of malnutrition and comorbidities among them as well as the limited physiological reserve and frailty nature of most of elderly.
In the current study we investigated the effect of malnutrition on HRQoL among sample of (170) community-dwelling elderly subjects living in rural settings.
Nutritional status was assessed using MNA, DQI-A and BMI. Health related quality of life was measured using SF-36. Comprehensive geriatric assessment including complete history taking, clinical examination, mental (MMSE), psychological (GDS) and functional assessment (ADL and IADL) were done for all subjects.
According to the current study, about (26.5%) of studied subjects suffered from malnutrition and (40.6%) of them were at risk according to MNA which is considered a high prevalence when compared with the worldwide
