Assessment of Quality of Care in Children and Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus in Diabetes Clinic of Children's Hospital, Ain Shams University

Abstract


Insulin-dependent diabetes (IDDM) is a chronic metabolic disorder with a long list of acute and chronic complications. Diabetes care is an integral part in the management of insulin-dependent diabetic children and adolescents. On the other hand, insulin therapy is the lifesaving drug for this group of patients. The ultimate goal of diabetes therapy and care is an optimal glycemic control and prevention of both acute and chronic complications.
The present study is a cross sectional, convenience study conducted at the Diabetes Clinic of Children Hospital, Ain Shams University to assess quality of diabetic care in our clinic, and to know the satisfaction of the patient about such care.
The study included 400 insulin dependent diabetic children and adolescents aged from 2-17 years (240 female and 160 males). Diabetic patients included in this study had a mean age of (10.20±3.92) years with a range of (2-17) years and their mean duration of IDDM was (3.47±2.82) years with a range of (0.02-14) years. They were selected from those following up in the clinic, data collected from:
 Patients’ medical records, including demographic data such as (age, sex, family history of diabetes), Related factors of Diabetes such as (age of onset of diabetes, diabetes duration, insulin therapy, severity of hypoglycemia, frequency of DKA and hospital admission per year).
