Bicycle Ergometer Exercise for Cardiovascular Rehabilitation Response in Patient with Primary Percutaneous Angi
Saud Sherwan Anwer;
Abstract
SUMMARY
T
he present study was done to evaluate the effect of bicycle ergometer on the functional capacity, echocardiography and quality of life in patients post myocardial infarction who did primary percutaneous angioplasty.
The study was conducted on 40 patients recruited in the period between May 2014 and May 2015 from cardiac rehabilitation clinic in the Cardiology department Ain- Shams University Hospital.
All patients had full history and thorough physical examination. BMI and waist circumference, HbA1c, lipid profile (total cholesterol, and LDL), echocardiography and symptom limited exercise test to assess functional capacity, and questionnaire to evaluate quality of life done to all patients for assessment of psychological burden, all of which were done before and after recruitment in a 3 months rehabilitation program.
The improvement in functional capacity was evaluated by modified Bruce symptom limited exercise test.
In the present study not only a highly significant improvement in the functional capacity after the rehabilitation program was found, but also highly significant reduction in blood pressure, heart rate, LDL, cholesterol, HbA1c, RBS, BMI, smokers number and quality of life score(improvement in Quality of life of patients).
However, there was no statistically significant improvement ejection fraction (assessed by echocardiography) after the rehabilitation program.
These findings were consistent with most of the previous studies in the same field except there were some controversy about the Ejection Fraction improvement of the rehabilitation program.
So, the present study found that using bicycle ergometer as a tool for exercise training cardiac rehabilitation program improves their functional capacity, their symptoms, both their hemodynamic and metabolic profiles and finally and hence can be use as an adjunct to treadmill in the CR program should be implemented in routine management of ischemic patients.
