Abstract


Variceal bleeding responsible for 20% of deaths 111 the countary side between the age of 20-50 years ( Abd El Gaffar, 1981) and it constitute about 80% of upper gastro­ intestinal .hemorrhage in Egypt due to the prevalence of schistosomiasis and cirrhosis (Madwar, 1987).

The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of endoscopic endoloop I igation of oesophageal varices in the mailagement of bleeding esophgeal varices in comparison to endoscopic sclerotherapy and endoscopic rubber band ligation f!S regards efficacy, technique related complica­ tions and mmiality rate.

150patients with a history of hematemesis and/or melena from oesophageal varices were randomly allocated into three groups. The sclerotherapy group (50 patients) rubber band group (50 patients) and endoloop group (50 patients).
