Assessment of Some Nanomaterials for Heavy Metals Removal from Water

Shaimaa Taha Elsaid El-Wakeel;

Abstract

The thesis content can be briefly described by:
Chapter I :
1. Includes an assessment of the availability of fresh water and per capita share of water in Egypt and discusses the deterioration of water quality and water pollution causes in Egypt.
2. Identification of nanotechnology and addresses its sources, classifications and its applications in different fields.
4. Discuses the application of nanotechnology in the environment, water and wastewater treatment.
5. States the objectives of the study which are:
• Synthesizing of different nanoparticles and studying their ability for adsorbing heavy metal ions from aqueous solution and real water.
• Nano magnetite prepared by co-precepitaion method ,characterized and used to remove heavy metals (Cr (VI), Ni2+, Cu2+,Cd2+ and Pb2+)
• Different modifications on the prepared nano magnetite were done by compositing with Dowex 50WX4 resin and the preparation of nano magnetite chitosan films to increase the magnetite stability and adsorption capacity .
• Carbon nanotubes were tested for heavy metals removal. Nitric acid used to oxidize carbon nanotubes and tested for metals removal.
• Nano zero valent iron prepared by liquid phase reduction method ,characterized and tested for heavy metals removal.
• Nano zero valent iron –Dowex 50WX4 resin composite prepared and tested for heavy metals removal.
• Nano zero valent iron – chitosan films synthesized and applied for heavy metals removal.
• Equilibrium , isotherms and kinetics of metals adsorption by different prepared adsorbents were studied.
Chapter II
1- Describes the materials and reagents used in the study.
2- Explains the methods adopted for the preparation of different adsorbents:
• Nano magnetite and nano magnetite composites ( magnetite kaolinite nanocomposites (Mag-KL) -nano magnetite Dowex 50WX4 resin (Mag-Dow) nanocomposites- nano magnetite chitosan (NMag-CS) films.
• Oxidized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-ox).
• Nano zero valent iron (NZVI) and nano zero valent iron composites (nano zero valent iron Dowex 50WX4 resin (NZVI-Dow) composites -nano zero valent iron chitosan films (NZVI-CS).
