A Study On Retinol Binding Proteins In Urine In Nephrotic Syndrome

Abstract
Nephrotic syndrome is one of the commonest chronic renal diseases in childhood. Nephrotic syndrome is characterized by proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia, edema and hyperlipidemia.
Most of the nephrotic patients go into complete remission after steroid therapy "steroidresponsive", however a group of patients fail to develop complete remission after steroid therapy "steroid resistant".
Although renal biopsy is the definitive investigation in kidney disorders and is particularily helpful in distinguishing steroid responsive from steroid resistant nephrotic patients, it is attended by a small risk to patient. Accordingly, non-invasive tests have been used to predict the response to steroids and the underlying renal histologic diagnosis inNS. Moreover, renal impairment may delay biopsy in FGS.
The aim of the present study is to predicet the response to steroid therapy using non-invasive test, by measuring the urinary retinol binding protein level in nephrotic patients during activity-before and after 2 months of steroid therapy.
This study was conducted on 31 patients of nephrotic syndrome. They were 13 females and 18 males, selected from the pediatric nephrology outpatient clinic or admitted at pediatric nephrology unit of Pediatric department, Assiut University Hospital.
All Cases were subjected to:
*Full history taking.
*Full clinical examination.
*Routine laboratory investigations including complete blood count, complete urine analysis, · 24 hours proteinuria, serum electrolytes, total
