Abstract
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common ICU problem with
a variety of pathophysiological patterns. It has devastating
consequences on patients' mortality and morbidity while its
management mainly depends on prevention. Although the use of
a unified diagnostic criteria was a progress in defining the
syndrome, many concerns were associated with its dependence
on serum creatinine and urine output. These concerns led to the
continuous search for a reliable kidney injury biomarker.
Urine neutophil associated lipocalin (uNGAL) was
extensively tested to diagnose AKI in several patients' subtypes
including patients in the ICU and patients with sepsis. It is a
molecule that is increased in response to inflammation to
