Phagocytic Functions in Children with Simple Obesity and its Relation with Serum Leptin

Dina Leksan Zaki;

Abstract

Childhood obesity has been called “One of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century. Obesity is associated with an increased risk of many medical complication either physical or psychological problems. Emerging data indicate an association between obesity and infectious diseases. Obesity may influence either the risk of getting an infection or the outcome of an infection once it is established.
Leptin is neurohormone predominantly synthesized and released into blood by adipocytes and serves as a signal for the brain of the body’s energy store. Leptin controls food intake through its receptors in the hypothalamus. Leptin is a key hormone in the regulation of body weight and nutrition.
The aim of this study was done to show the competence of phagocytic function (intracellular killing) in obese children and its relation to their serum leptin.
This was a cross-sectional case-control study conducted on 40 obese children consecutively recruited from the Obesity clinic of Ain-shams University, Children’s hospital while the control group was taken from Ain Shams University Outpatient clinic. They were 40 non obese (5th percentile to less than 85th percentile) age- and sex-matched healthy children.
All enrolled children were subjected toa detailed interview and full history taking, detailed clinical examination, anthropometric measures, Laboratory assessment for CBC, serum leptin, DHR test.
The results were tabulated, graphically represented and analyzed using appropriate computer statistical methods.
Serum leptin hormone level is higher in obese patient group than lean control group. Also, serum leptin hormone is positively correlated with obesity represented by BMI.
There is no significant difference of DHR between obese patient group and lean control group.
Our study could not demonstrate any correlation between serum leptin and DHR.
Frequency of infection is higher in obese patient group than lean control group and also correlated positively with serum leptin.
