A Critical Discourse Analysis of the World Economic Forum Debate at Davos, 2009
Heba Ahmed Fathi;
Abstract
This study analyzes the language used in a political debate by using an eclectic approach within the framework of critical discourse analysis. The rationale for the present study was that the political debate among Amr Moussa,RecepTayyip Erdoğan, andthe Israeli President-then- Shimon Peres contains most, if not all, of the linguistic aspects pertaining to the analysis of ideology and power relationships evolving through transitivity, presuppositions, allusions and cultural lacunae. The study is carried out according to the above mentioned pragmalinguistic (linguistic pragmatics, pragmatic linguistics) features within the unique genre of political debates highlighting both the surface and undercurrent ideological and power conflicts and cross-cultural gaps decoded from the abstruse political spin.
The present study attempted to find answers to the following questions:
1- How does the analysis of transitivity reveal attempts to establish positivity and assert mutual understanding, yet, simultaneously, reveal attempts on both sides to display power and influence?
2- What implicit messages are surreptitiously delivered by politicians to a variety of audience to assert certain ideological concepts or establish new ones?
3- How do cultural lacunae negatively or positively affect the politicians’ discursive performance and mutual understanding?
The study resulted in the following findings:
1. Transitivity roles serve to point out the type of clauses used by each politician in an attempt to reflect and reveal power.
2. Presupposition and allusion as tools of pragmatic analysis aim at revealing the hidden aspects of ideology influencing the choice of discourse on the part of each diplomat.
3. The application of the analysis of cultural-emotive lacuna clarified the significance of the emotional tendencies that are traced in Egyptian, Turkish, and Israeli politicaldiscourse.
Key words: CDA – transitivity – presupposition – allusions – lacunae
Arab – Israeli political debates
