ECHOGRAPHIC EVALUATION OF THE MALIGNANCY POTENTIAL IN OVARIAN TUMOURS

Ahmed Fouad Mousa Ahmed;

Abstract

Adnexal masses are common among women of all ages and two thirds of ovarian tumours are encountered during reproductive years, of those the risk of malignancy in an ovarian mass in patients above 40 years is remarkably high although the premenarchal lesions are usually malignant.

U/S has long been the primary imagine modality used to evaluate patients 'with known or suspected ovarian abnormality. Up to most recent studies, sonography has remained the preferred method in the initial evaluation of ovarian neoplasms due to its many advantages over other
' modalities.

2D ultrasonography (Ultrasonographic Morphological Score) has increasingly become the main diagnostic tool in ObstetriCs and Gynecology. Many efforts have been carried out to improve the accuracy of 2D ultrasonography in discriminating benign from malignant ovarian
. lesions.

T!'1e introduction of TVUS and color Doppler has improved the detection of adnexal masses, the. use of TVUS has a number of potential advantages over the transabdominal approach and TVUS should remain tf1e primary screening modality for suspicious adnexal masses.
