Study of Bronchiectasis Phenotype and Their Common Pathogens in Late COPD

Ahmed Sameh Sayed Ahmed;

Abstract

B
ronchiectasis and COPD share many characteristics, from both the physiopathologic and clinical-functional viewpoints. Reviewing the literature showed existence of a linear relationship between the appearance of bronchiectasis and the severity of COPD, and a higher prevalence of bronchiectasis above that of the general population.
Evidence that there is a causal relation in which COPD would be a risk factor capable of producing bronchiectasis over the course of its natural evolution would be the most overwhelming evidence for an association between two diseases.
Early identification of patients with COPD and severe bronchiectasis would be a significant advance, as it would provide opportunities to start early treatment.
The current study was undertaken to estimate the relation between late stages COPD and development of bronchiectasis and colonizing the airways with potentially pathogenic organisms.
The study included 60 males ranging in age from 47 – 80 years old with mean age 59.37 ± 7.87 who were diagnosed with COPD according to the national standard. They were classified according to severity of airway obstruction using spirometric measurements and underwent high-resolution tomographic scan and sputum samples were collected for bacterial culture.
