STUDIES ON THE PREVALENT SURGICAL AFFECTIONS AT ALEXANDRIA AND BEHIRA PROVINCES AND THEIR SURROUNDINGS

Abstract


Surgical affections which. were recorded in large and small ruminants at Alexandria and Behera provinces in this work are classified into 5 groups: A. HEAD AFFECTIONS:
1. Ocular Affections Were Reported in 38 Cases of Ruminants.
Superficial traumatic keratitis was diagnosed unilaterally in 2 cattle, 3 sheep and one goat. Thorough flushing of the corneal surface with• distilled water and application of terracortril eye ointment twice daily proved to be beneficial treatment within 5 days.
Infectious keratoconjunctivitis: Bilateral affections •in most., crowded animals was commonly noticed in large farms. The affected animal received local and systemic treatments for at least 7 days.
Pigmentary keratitis: two forms of pigmentary keratitis were recorded, complete and partial. Corticosteroid ointment application to the cornea lead to suppression of spreading of the pigment in all corneal surface, after removal of the first cause.
Complete blindness was observed in animals affected with traumatic cataract (2 cattle) and leucoma in (3 sheep). Surgical interference had no successful treatment.
