Abstract

Acute respiratory infections rank as the first cause of morbidity and mortality among Egyptian children under 5 years. Pneumonia is the leading cause of death from acute respiratory infections, killing up to five million under five year's age annually in developing countries. Nursing intervention is crucial to maintain their life. Therefore, the main aim of this study is to design, implement and evaluate the effect of a teaching program provided for nurses on the nursing care of children with pneumonia. All the available nurses who were caring for children with pneumonia were included, with total number of 22 nurses each nurse observed for 3 times pre and post implementing the program with total number of 66 observations. The study was conducted at the Intensive Care Unit, New Pediatric University Hospital, Cairo University. Data required were collected through the use of questionnaire sheet (pre-post test) and observational checklists. The-results of this study concluded that there was an improvement in nurses knowledge and practice after program implementation and there was a highly significant difference observed betweenthe post test and pre test knowledge grades (post test was better than pre test). Such result reflects the effect of the teaching program for nurses in improving their knowledge and practice. Also training of nursing staff in special area of patient care gives a high quality of performance.
