Abstract

Topically administrated antiglaucoma medications affect the structure and the integrity of the ocular surface and tear film. Side effects of the eye drops could be due to the active component or preservatives.

The preservatives may cause disruption of tear film lipids and distribution of mucous gland cells. In our study we found that dry eye affects our glaucoma patients as evidenced by TBUT and Schirmer test which were significantly lower in glaucoma patients as compared to normal controls.

Many factors affect the prevalence of dry eye in glaucoma patients. These factors include the multi-drug therapy commonly used in glaucoma patients, the duration for which these drugs were administered, the concentration and the type of preservative used in each group of antiglaucoma medications. In our study we investigated the effect of drugs used and the duration of treatment.

Our study was cross section study to compare the effect of BAK and Purite as preservatives used in B blocker and Alpha agonist antiglaucoma eyedrops. We found that the patients having dry eye (by Schirmer
