APOPTOSIS IN RHEUMATIC DISEASES

REEM ABO - EL -MONEM MOHAMED HABIB;

Abstract

Human diseases can be classified jn terms of life-and-death problems of specialized cells (Thompson, 1995).

Many autoimmune rheumatic diseases are characterized by immune cell infiltration that results in the destruction of local specialized Us. Other auto-immune iliseases are associated with inflammatory infiltrates and the accumulation of cells that fail to die (Akshay et al, 1997).

The elucidation of the biochemical pathways and specific proteins that regulate programmed cell death provide a remarkable opportunity to maillpulate the life-and-death decisions of the cell and the basic understanding and therapeutic manipulation of programmed cell death will have far-reaching implications for the future health of rheumatic disease patients
