COMPARATIVE ANATOMICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES ON THE STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION OF RETINAL SYNAPTIC ORGANELLES OF EYE IN DIFFERI NT ANIMALS

Mohamed Arafa Adly Boraey Abul-Ela;

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to investigate, on a comparative basis, the strucural and functional significance of synaptic organelles in the mammalian retina. Electron microscopic examination of both outer and inner plexiform layers of the retina in a number of mammalian species, the albinotic Balb/c mouse, Syrian hamster, Djungarian hamster, gerbil, guinea pig and rabbit confirmed the presence of three distinct subtypes of synaptic organelles or bodies on the ribbon synapse.
