STUDIES ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SELECTIVE DISINFECTANTS FOR DISINFECTION OF POULTRY HOUSES WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO AEROSOL DISINFECTION

Abstract
1. The bactericidal and fungicidal activities of five chemical disinfectants were tested. The disinfectants used were TH4+, Quaternary active sterilizer (QAS), Tek-Trol, Biocid-30 and Iodine active sterilizer (lAS). The effectiveness of these disinfectants were evaluated against the following bacterial and fungal species Escflericlzia coli, Salmonella pullorum, Staphylococcus aureus, Aspergillus fumigatus and Candida albicans.
2. It was clarified from the study that the neutralizer of choice for TH4+ and QAS was letheen broth. The result revealed that letheen broth gave 7.8%, 5.1% and 2.9% inhibition of E coli, Sal. pullorum and Staph. aureus, respectively. For Tek-Trol, a combination of0.3% lecithin + 3% Tween 80 inhibited E. coli, Sal. pullorum and Staph. aureus by 3.7%, 5.3% and7.l%, respectively. On the other hand, 0.5% sodium thiosulphate was the neutralizer of choice for Biocid-30 and Iodine active sterilizer.
3. The selective disinfectants were evaluated at a range of concentrations less and higher than the recommended concentration.
The results obtained in this study revealed that:
TH4+ (1 : 200) killed Sal. pullorum and C. albicans within 5 min. killed Asp. fumigatus within I 0 min.
killed E. coli and Staph. aureus within J 5 min. QAS (I :500) killed SaL pullorum and C. albicans within 5 min.
killed E. coli within 20 min.
killed Staplt. aureus and Asp.fumigatus within 30min.
