Comparison of Micro Leakage of Two Pit and Fissure Sealants under Four Different Conditions (In Vitro Study)

Abstract
New methods of caries prevention have been focusing on the occlusal pit and fissure caries, as this type of caries have always been the earliest and most prevalent of all types. The clinical retention of sealants was found to be the most important factor on caries prevention.
The success of the sealant is dependent up on its marginal integrity, which can be evaluated by measuring microleakage. The ability of a sealant to prevent microleakage is an important parameter, since the carious process can be initiated and sustained under the sealant.
Aim of the study:
This in vitro study was carried out to evaluate and compare the microleakage of the resin modified glass ionomer (Fuji Triage) and the resin reinforced glass ionomer (Ionoseal) sealants under four different conditions (dry condition, water contamination, saliva contamination, saliva contamination with air-drying).
Materials and methods:
Sixty-four extracted non-carious human premolar teeth were randomly assigned into two main groups according to the fissure sealant used (Fuji Triage a1 and Ionoseal a2) 32 in each .Each group was further divided into four subgroups according to the different surface conditions as follows:
Subgroup a1b1 (8 teeth were sealed with Fuji Triage under dry condition).
Subgroup a1b2 (8 teeth were sealed with Fuji Triage under water contamination condition).
Subgroup a1b3 (8 teeth were sealed with Fuji Triage under saliva contamination condition).
Subgroup a1b4 (8 teeth were sealed with Fuji Triage under saliva contamination with air-drying condition).
Subgroup a2b1 (8 teeth were sealed with Ionoseal under dry condition).
Subgroup a2b2 (8 teeth were sealed with Ionoseal under water contamination condition).
Subgroup a2b3 (8 teeth were sealed with Ionoseal under saliva contamination condition).
