Abstract
Suicide is a human act based on the clear intention of the individual to end his/her life. It cannot be considered a disease (thus it often originates in the coordinates of a disease), it is not provoked by a biological anomaly (although some biological factors have a significant role in suicide) and is not an immoral act (however, this is a persistent belief). In the spirit of this idea there can be expected no theory which would attempt to explain in a singular mode the suicidal behavior, as it is an extremely complex phenomenon.
Many theories attempted to explain the suicidal behavior. From a biological perspective we can discuss about genetic and stress factors, modifications of transmission systems (serotonin; HPA axis; noradrenergic system; dopamine, GABA.) and neuro-anatomical abnormalities involved in suicidal behavior.
The main psychologic theories are, the psycho-analytic theory, the psychosocial theory, the cognitive theory, the behavioral theory, interpersonal theory, the existentialist theory, while the main theories examining the social environmental influences are: social disorganization and social change theories, Durkheim’s theories on suicide, urbanisation, social status and social mobility, status integration and social role conflict, social network theory, social interaction theories,
