The Effect of Different Implant Abutment Connections on Strain Developed Around Implant Retained Mandibular Overdentures

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of two different implant abutment connections; internal hex implant abutment connection .and conical implant abutment connection on the strain developed around implant retained mandibular overdentures.
Two mandibular overdentures supported by implants of 8mm diameter and ll mm length with different implant abutment connections were constructed. The first denture was supported by implant with internal hex implant abutment connection while the second one was supported by implant with conical implant abutment connection.
Two acrylic experimental mandibular models with two implants for each model were used for this study. This model replicates the anatomical features of the lower edentulous jaw and the mucosa covering the ridge. Four channel strain meter was used to asses and record the strain induced to the mesial and distal surfaces of the each implants.
Two strain gauges were installed in the distal and mesial walls of each implant. Loading device was used to produce a standardized static load within the physiologic limits of 100N on both anterior and posterior regions bilaterally in separate stages.
Microstrain was recorded on each site of the strain gauge during bilateral loading with enough time elapsed between each loading to allow complete rebound of the resilient structures.
Using paired T test to compare between designs I and design II revealed statistically significant difference between designs I and design II.
The results obtained showed that greater strain was induced on implants with internal hex implant abutment connection compared to strain induced on implants with conical implant abutment connection during bilateral anterior and posterior load application.
