Role of Magnetic Resonance Imaging in the diagnosis of Anterior Cruciate Ligament injuries

Abstract

Summary and Conclusion
I
n this study 30 patients with suspected ACL tears were examined by routine MRI knee protocol without contrast.
Our study revealed that about half of patients referred for MRI examination with history suggestive of ACL were normal by MRI. And this make the MRI a good tool in preventing unnecessary surgical intervention so it’s highly recommended to do MRI before such diagnostic or therapeutic intervention.
On the other side this high percentage of normal results may be reduced if a good history and clinical examination were done by an experienced clinician as many authors state.
High percentage of associated medial meniscus and medial collateral ligament injuries was seen and this may be an overestimation due to the small sample size.
The limitation of this study was the lack of arthroscopic correlation and the limited number of subjects included. So we recommend a larger study with a good clinical and arthroscopic correlation and with good communication with the orthopaedic surgeons to be done.
