Applications of Quantum Mechanics in Signal Processing

Akram Youssry Abdel Aziz Mohamed;

Abstract

The main objective of this thesis was to answer the question whether
it is possible to utilize the theory of quantum mechanics to solve signal
processing problems. This question was answered in Chapter 4,
where a proposed framework was developed and applied to the problem
of image segmentation. The basic idea is to map each pixel to a
two-state quantum system, and use the laws of quantum mechanics
to solve the problem. The performance of the proposed algorithm
turned out to be of high accuracy with regard to di erent types of
images. The developed algorithm was shown to be implementable
on a quantum computer which opens a new category of applications
for such emerging technology. In Chapter 5, the presented framework
was applied to solve a biomedical image processing problem
which is segmentation of retinal images to detect blood vessels. The
results showed a superior performance of the quantum-based algorithm
compared to other state-of-the-art algorithms.
There are lots of issues to be investigated in the future. This
includes the following points
