Mona Ilamdi Afifi;

Abstract

The advanced practice nurse is a registered nurse who has completed an accredited college or university graduate program in a nursing specialty and who has acquired the knowledge and practice skills needed to function effectively as a nurse anesthetist (American Nurse Association, 1995 & Joanne et al., 2000).

Anesthesia nursing forms a compulsory part of the operating department nursing function in many countries (Margaret, 1995). In Egypt, so far, this specialty is not established and more efforts should be done to prove the importance of this career and define the required teaching and training program.

The purpose of the study was to: construct and implement a training program for the development of specialized nurse anesthetists and to evaluate its effectiveness on trainees' performance.

To accomplish this purpose 30 nurses working in the operating room at El-Demerdash Hospital (H1), a military hospital (H2) and a private hospital (H3) were chosen for the study, as well as 20 anesthesiologists from the same hospitals were chosen to get their suggestion about anesthesia nursing specialty.
