Shouldice Versus Bassini’s Techniques in Inguinal Hernia Repair

Hatem Mahmoud Soltan;

Abstract

Groin herniae occur in 3 - 8% of the population (Editorial,
1977). Recurrence after inguinal hernia repair remains a significant problem (Dysine and Soroff, 1990). So it . is important to perform a good hernia repair.

There are different methods of inguinal hernia repair. The most popular one is Bassini's technique (Read, 1987). Shouldice repair is a modern revival of the original Bassini's repair described by Edoardo Bassini in 1887 (Glassow, 1984), which have the best results and low recurrence rate (1%) in specialized centers (Wantz, 1989).

So our study aimed to evaluate Shouldice and Bassini's techniques in inguinal hernia repair.

Thirty adult male patients with primary inguinal hernia were selected and entered in our study. They distributed equally into two groups each one consists of 15 patients with
17 inguinal herniae (2 patients had bilateral inguinal hernia in both groups). Full investigations and good preoperative assessment were clone for all patients.
