Abstract


The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of using a suggested program in basic reading on developing the reading skills of second year English Majors of the Primary Division in Faculties of Education. Seventy-five students were treated as one experimental group. They were trained in the proposed reading program Word identification skills; structural analysis and contextual analysis, were the only skills handled in the program
Tools of the study included a questionnaire to determine the subskills ofstmctural analysis and contextual. analysis, a pre posttest
in basic reading, the English Proficiency Exam for Egypt (EPEE),

and the training program. Results revealed that the performance of

the group on the post-test was significantly better than their pre-test performance. There were some gender differences, favoring the females, in achievement in the posttest of basic reading, and there was a positive correlation between subjects' language proficiency and their achievement in basic reading It was recommended
that more studies should be conducted to investigate the needs of this sample of te'a.chcrs.
