Abstract


Drug abuse has become a major social problem of the modern world as it is very common, In Egypt; drug dependence is considered one of the serious problems that worry both the people and government. In addition to the considerable human costs, drugs and alcohol have significant detrimental effects on the economy. Substance abuse problems cost the Egyptian economy approximately $800 million annually, which includes the amount spent on illegal drugs and what the government spends to combat the problem.
The majority of these illicit drugs or their metabolites are excreted through the kidneys and renal complications of drug abuse are very common.
Our aim from this study was to assess the prevalence of acute kidney injury among drug abuse intoxicated cases admitted to poison control center Ain Shams University Hospitals and evaluate the role of NGAL as early predictor biomarker of AKI in such patients.
