STUDY OF EAR WAX

Enas Mohamed Roshdy Mohamed;

Abstract

Ear wax is the product of the sebaceous , ceruminous or apocrine glands together with cells exfoliated from the cornfield stratum of the epithelium ofthe external auditory canal.
In normal conditions the earwax covers the surface of the external third of the auditory canal and has a brown yellow color and a sticky consistency.
There are two types of earwax: wet and dry, both phenotypes are determined by a pair of genes, the appearance rate of both phenotypes varies according to race.
Absence of earwax may lead to infection as it serves an antimicrobial role through physically protecting the external auditory canal skin, establishing a low PH and an inhospitable environment for pathogens.
The composition• of earwax has been assessed by several techniques e. g gas chromatography and mass spectrometry•
