Abstract
It is noted that English maJors m the university level lacK competence in reading and writing skills. Note-taking, writing exams, and writing essays to be corrected are the only activities practiced by students.
Also, reading simplified texts, reading staff comments on specific texts, reading word- for-word are the main factors that hinder students to interact positively with the text, and prevent them from practicing higher levels of reading which are critical reading skills.
