The Comparison Of Medical Cost Of Inpatient And Outpatient Bronchial Asthma Patients In Ain Shams University Specialized Hospital
Rami Mohammad EL Qattan;
Abstract
Asthma is associated with enormous healthcare expenditures that include both direct and indirect costs. It is also associated with the loss of future potential earnings related to both morbidity and mortality. (Ungar WJ, et al., 2001)
Asthma affects people of all ages and is a significant source of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Approximately 300 million people in the world currently have asthma and recent decades have shown a concerning increase in the prevalence of this condition in both children and adults. (Masoli et al., 2004)
It is estimated that there may be an additional 100 million more asthmatics by 2025.(Chuesakoolvanich K, 2007)
Globally, the economic costs associated with asthma exceed those of tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS combined. Developed economies can expect to spend 1 to 2% of their health-care budget on asthma. Investigations have shown that the financial burden on patients with asthma in different Western countries ranges from $300 to $1,300 per patient per year. (European lung white book. 2003)
The aim of this study is to evaluate the economic burden for bronchial asthma patients during hospital stay in Ain Shams University specialized hospital in comparison to the treatment cost at the outpatient.
The present study has been conducted on 30 asthmatic (20 females and 10 males) patients that were admitted at Ain shams university hospital (Chest department and respiratory ICU) and followed as two stages:
Stage A: Medication cost during hospital stay focusing on bronchodilators, antibiotics, steroids and medications for Co-morbid diseases each separate entity.
Stage B: Outpatient medication cost for the same groups of previous patients in an equal period of past hospital stay focusing also on the same medications entities.
Data of medications cost has been grouped to bronchodilators, steroids, antibiotics and medications of co-morbid diseases.
A comparison between the medication cost during hospital stay and the outpatient treatment at the same period of time is done and was statistically tested.
