Abstract

Intussusception is the most common cause of intestinal obstruction in children. It is due to invagination of one portion of the gut into another portion adjacent to it most probably distal into proximal. The cause of intussusception is usually idiopathic but theories suggest due to change of feeding habits or seasonal incidence related to certain virus. Intussusception may also occur secondary to polyps, submucous lipoma or inverted meckl's diverticulum.

Intussusception is composed of three segments entering layer, returning layer and outer sheath associated with apex and base. Types of intussusception are ilio-caecal, ilio-ilial, colocolic, ilio-colic (ilio ilial protruding through ilio caecal junction) or multiple.

Intussusception is usually diagnosed by attaches of frequent vomiting, absolute constipation (not passing stool or flatus). Presence of red current jelly stool, feeling abdomen distended, by clinical examination a sausage shaped mass may be felt, right iliac fossa is usually empty (sign de dance) by per rectal examination. No faces but finger is stained blood and mucous. Diagnosis is confirmed by plain
X-ray on the abdomen in erect position showing multiple air fluid
