Abstract


The concept of intelligent buildings and intelligent envelopes became a turning point in architecture and construction fields over the last three decades. Intelligent envelopes are intrinsic part of intelligent buildings. They have some characteristics which distinguish them from the traditional envelopes which don't depend on intelligent mechanism to work. They have some features that provide natural lighting and ventilation. This will help saving energy in buildings. Artifical ventilation and lighting are considered the highest consumers of energy in buildings. In spite of the advantages of these envelopes regarding comfort and energy saving, it has been spread in developed countries only. Developing countries depend on the traditional envelopes, which account for between 15% and 40% of the total building budget.

This thesis provides a brief overview of the current progress in using intelligent building envelopes, which are considered a rapidly developing new field. It will provide an operational definition of the kinetic building envelopes and clarify their impact on the comfort and energy conservation of the building. It consists of five chapters in three parts and ends with the conclusions and recommendations. Chapter one discusses the problem of energy consumption of buildings in Egypt, besides illustrating the impact of the building envelope on the comfort and energy consumption of buildings. Chapter two discusses the concept of the artificial intelligence, intelligent buildings and intelligent envelopes, besides studying the properties of these envelopes and what distinguishes them from the traditional envelopes .The chapter classified intelligent envelopes into several categories, depending on: the levels of adaptive behavior of the building envelopes, and the kinetic system which is used in them.

The second part (Chapter three and four) discusses three types of intelligent building envelopes. Chapter three discusses the smart envelope. Chapter four discusses the (intelligent /adaptive) envelope and the responsive envelope, besides knowing the advantages and disadvantages of each type and what must be taken into account in the design and operation of them.

Chapter five analyzes some of intelligent building envelopes on the global and local level in the scope of the study, to clarify their impact on the comfort and energy conservation of the building. It olso includes a field study of some buildings in the Smart Village to clarify the type of facades used in the modern buildings on the local level and to find out the reasons for non-proliferation of intelligent building envelopes on the local level.

The thesis concluded the impact of using intelligent building envelopes on the comfort and energy conservation of buildings; besides determination the relationship between the complexity and intelligence of the envelope and the rate of energy conservation. The thesis provided some recommendations for using this type of intelligent building envelopes on the local level.
