Pattern of Work Related Musculoskeletal Disorders Among Five Stars Egyptian Hotel Workers

Abstract
Musculoskeletal disorders is a broad umbrella term that including a wide variety of disorders involving the bones joints and the soft tissues involved in moving those joints. It involves the muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints..
Musculoskeletal disorders are considered a major health problem affecting employees as well as employers.
MSDs affect the workers’ quality of life by feeling discomfort, ill health condition and psychological impact in terms of low morale, dissatisfaction and reduced productivity.
Clinical presentations of MSDs varies from aching and tiredness of the affected region to fatigue and weakness persisted at rest, inability to sleep and to perform light duties.
Risk factor for MSDs varies from individual, environmental, social, and work place risk factors.
A cross section study designed for studying the prevalence of work related MSDs among five stars hotel workers, Sheraton Cairo, including the hotel manpower (817) workers. A questionnaire was completed by the researcher while interviewing each worker. Nordic scale was used to asses the prevalence of MSDs symptoms.
The current study was carried out on men (84.1%) women (15.9%).according to marriage status married (72.3%),single(23.7% )and widows (1.6%). according to level of education secondary school education (35.4%) university educated (31.1%) and high school education (27.8%). the mean age of the study group isSD (44.92)±. according to job nature is waiters (33.4%) then receptionist (31.2%) and housekeeping (23.0%) the body mass index BMI ,overweight (60%) then obese (23%). According to anatomical region affected with MSDs, The spine is the most affected (17.4%) then the joints (7.6%) and spine and joints( 0.2%).lower back (14.44%), right knee (5.02%),lift knee (4.16%),right lower leg (3.18%),neck (2.2%),lift lower leg (1.35%),right shoulder (1.1%),left shoulder( 0.61%),right forearm (0.37%),right thigh (0.37%),right upper arm (0.37%),lift thigh (0.37)%,hip( 0.24%), right wrist( 0.24%),lift wrist (0.12)%,lift forearm (0.12%).
Low back pain, The risk factors for low back pain is body mass index BMI (obesity) the highest odds ratio OR 3.3 (95% CI)(2.16-5.13)followed by duration of symptoms more than 10 years OR 3.04(1.78-5.2). The age more than 40 years OR 2.9(1.67-5.4).
Ergonomic intervention is an important factor in MSD s prevention that includes engineering and administrative intervention.
The treatment of WMSDs involves several approaches includes Restriction of movement, Application of heat or cold, exercise, medications and surgery.
