Michel Foucault: A Reading of his Legacy in Light of Critical Theory
Dina Mohamed Abd Elsalam;
Abstract
The previous chapters presented a full-length treatment of Foucault's influence on and relationship with critical theory: structuralism, post structuralism, new historicism, queer theory, feminism and colonial and post-colonial studies. The conclusion will, therefore, point out the main findings and outcomes of the thesis.
As Chapter One, "Foucault's Archaeology and Structuralism", has made it clear, although Foucault's early works, The Order of Things, The Birth of the Clinic and An Archaeology of Knowledge are considered structuralist, they did not influence structuralist critical theory. Structuralism as a movement started in France in the 1950s and was first seen in the work of the anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss and the literary critc Roland Barthes. Then it swept Paris in the 1960s and appeared in the work of many thinkers, including Foucault.
