A study on the Protective Role of i ' Isoflavones Against the Toxicity of \ Pyrethriod (cypermethrin) in Mammals '

Khaled Salem AI-Salhen;

Abstract

The present study was carried out at the Hormone and Environmental Toxicology laboratories, Department of Environmental Studies, Institute of Graduate Studies and Research, Alexandria University. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of cypermethrin with or without isoflavone as antioxidant on physiological, biochemical characteristics and reproductive performance of male rabbits.

The results obtained can be summarized as follows:

A) Treatment with cypermethrin alone caused:

1- A significant decrease (P<0.05) in body weight compared with control group. This effect was accompanied by a significant decrease (p<0.05) in dry matter intake and water intake.

2- A significant decrease (P<0.05) in carcass, dressing, epididymis and testes relative weights. But relative weights of liver, kidney and spleen significantly (P<0.05) increased compared with control animals. Meanwhile, brain, lung, heart and bladder relative weights in cypermethrin group were statistically similar to control.

3- Plasma glucose, urea, creatinine and total bilirubin concentrations were significantly increased

(P<0.05).

4- A significant increase (P<0.05) in plasma total lipid, cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL and VLDL, while HDL decreased compared with control group.
