IMPROVEMENT OF SOME ECONOMIC TRAITS IN QUAILS

Abstract


The present study was carried out at the Poultry Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, Minufiya University through the hatching seasons of 1994-1995 and 1995-1996. The aim of the investigation
,,•as to improve some economic traits in quails through three generations. The studied traits were fertility, hatchability, body
\H ight and gain, age at sexual maturity, egg weight, egg number and feed conversion.

Results obtained and conclusions can be summarized as follows:-


1- Base population (Go):-


I. Females were heavier than males with higher growth rates.


2. The results of selecting individuals showed some discrepancies between the expected and realized means of body weight. The expected (mean plus one s.d.) of males and females of selected indiYiduals were 13 L5 and 141.7 g, respccti\cly (i.e. 119+19.5 and 125.3+ 16.4 g) for males and females, while the observed means were 130 and 140 g, respectively. It was found a fair agreement between expected and observed means of females rather than that of males.
