Abstract

BPPV is one of the most debilitating symptoms that interfer with social and work life. Cupulilithiasis of the posterior semicircular canal is the main proposed pathology in cases of GPPV.Lascr destruction of the disordered vestibular end organ, posterior crista ampullaris of the posterior semicircular canal, can be used as treatment ofBPPV.

The present work was designed to investigate the effect of different power settings of C02 laser, used to destruct the vestibular end organ of the posterior semicircular canal as a treatment ofBPPV, on the cochlea and other neuro-epithelial structures of the inner ear.

This study carried out 48 male healthy pigmented guinea pig of the same age and body weight (about 200 gm). They were randomized into two groups:

Groupl: control group (12 animals)

Animals of this group were anaesthetized and immediately sacrificed by decapitation using a sharp knife and the temporal bones were obtained.

Group II: Experimental group (36 animals)

Animals of this group received anesthesia, sagital incision (about 3 em in length) was done through the skin and subcutaneous tissue, and edges of this incision were retracted. The frontalis muscle was also incised and retracted at both sides. This approach allowed access to the tympanic bulla, which was opened to access the ampulla of the posterior semicircular canal.
