"SPECTROSCOPIC STUDIES ON SOME PHPTOCHROMIC POLYMERIC MATERIALS DRIVED FROM POLY (a-METHYLACRYLIC ACID HYDRAZIDE) AND THE CORRESPONDING LOW MOLECULAR WEIGHT MODELS"
El-Sayed Ezzat El-Sayed Abd El-Magyed;
Abstract
This thesis comprises three chapters. The first one deals with a general review on the photochemical behaviour of poly (N-salicylidene methylacrylic acid hydrazide) and poly (N-pyridoxylidene methylacrylic acid hydrazide) and their low weight models N salicylidene acetyl hydrazine and N-pyridoxylidene acetyl hydrazine. This review includes synthesis, electronic absorption spectra, acid base properties, emission & excitation spectra and trans-cis isomerization of poly (N-salicylidene & N-pyridoxylidene methylacrylic acid hydrazides) and related monomeric hydrazones. This chapter also includes the aim of investigation of this work.
The second chapter descnbes the preparation of the compounds as well as the experimental techniques and physical measurements used.
The third chapter is devoted to a detailed discussion of the resuhs obtained
throughout the work. This chapter contains two main classes; the first class deals with a seires of bis (N-salicylidene) dicarboxylic acid hydrazide and the second class deals with a seires ofbis (N-pyridoxylidene) dicarboxylic acid hydrazide hydrochloride.
The first class of bis (N-salicylidene) dicarboxylic acid hydrazide include three main parts. The first part deals with the ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra illustrating the characteristic electronic absorption spectra of each compound which show four absorption bands (band I, II, ill and IV). In the ground state, the bis (N-salicylidene)
dicarboxylic acid hydrazide exists in enolimine form in equilibrium with the mononegative anion. This part also deals with the acid-base properties of the compounds and the results obtained proved that the origin of band IV is the mononegative anion and the bis (N salicylidene) dicarboxylic acid hydrazide have four deprotonation steps with increasing NaOMe cocentration. The last point of this part is the effect of irradiation on the absorption
