Abstract

SUMMARY
A
ntibiotics overuse contributes to the global concern of losing their effectiveness due to resistance, with the consecutive cost of increasing morbidity and mortality. Public awareness directly affects antibiotics consumption, and gains more impact in countries lacking proper regulations in dispensing antibiotics as Egypt where the decision to use an antibiotic is governed with the individuals beliefs resulting in over 30% use of un-prescribed antibiotics for both adults and children.
A KAP (Knowledge, Attitudes and Practice) study can help to highlight the main predictors of misconceptions regarding the use of antibiotics, thus facilitating the intervention needed at the level of the community to enhance the adherence to a proper usage.
Objectives
The study was conducted to asses knowledge, attitude and practice of parents regarding antimicrobials use for their infants and children, and to identify factors affecting them.
Subjects and methods
A cross sectional study was carried out in the pediatrics outpatient clinic of Ain Shams university hospital and the First settlement Family medicine centre.
