STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF RADIOACTIVE WASTE CONCRETE DISPOSAL VAULTS

Abdei-Salam Ismail Abdel-Fattah At-Reefy;

Abstract

Radioactive wastes are residues from any activity that deals with radioactive material. Unfortunately, changing the radioactive material structure, either physically or chemically, will not reduce radiological activity of the material. Therefore, time is the only factor that could be used to reduce the radiological activity of radioactive materials. The concrete disposal vaults are very good system for shallow disposal techniques for the safe storage and disposal of radioactive wastes. Concrete disposal vaults must be designed to live long life up to 500 years. During this period, concrete vaults must be able to resist all superimposed and dead loads as well as chemical and climatic attacks.

This thesis is divided to two main parts; the first was proposing the guidelines and requirements for designing reinforced concrete disposal vaults. The second part was concerning the mathematical modeling of the disposal vaults using ANSYS software in order to determine the factors that affect the vaults during their long life. Eventually, a new method for analyzing disposal vaults structurally in
two dimensions was proposed.
