Abstract


Rail transportation in Egypt faces a continuous increase of demand against a limited track capacity which causes several delays and accidents.
The present thesis aims to calculate and improve the track capacity of single line, which is more complicated to be studied than the double one.
Three analytical methods were applied to find out the track capacity for single lines: The modified UIC 406, Scott and the proposed method.
Eight single lines of Egyptian railway network are selected as case studies: three single lines for passenger only, one line for freight only, while three lines are mixed of passenger/freight with mechanical signal system and the last one is for mixed of passenger/freight with electrical signal system based on the official timetable for 2012.
This research, presents a new proposed analytical method to compute the single track capacity and compare the results with that of modified UIC 406 and Scott methods .It is found that, the proposed method can be easily applied to increase the capacity of the single track railway lines and to improve its operation.
